RECOGNIZE THE SIGNS OF ABUSE IN SENIORS

SOCIAL ISOLATION:

NEGLECT:

Signs include malnourishment, dehydration, improper medication management, and unsanitary living conditions. Individuals may also have poor hygiene or lack essential services like heat, running water, electricity, and medical care.

FINANCIAL EXPLOITATION:

Be aware of missing income, depleted savings, or lost property. Examples include unauthorized check cashing, bank account misuse, or property theft for personal gain.

PHYSICAL ABUSE:

Look for cuts, bruises, burns, fractures, and pressure sores. Abuse can also involve forced confinement, sexual assault, and emotional or verbal mistreatment.

Older adults or individuals with disabilities may suffer from isolation or untreated health conditions if they have no one available or willing to help meet their basic needs.

 How do I report abuse, neglect, or exploitation?

Call the Department of Family and Protective Services Statewide Intake at 800-252-5400 or submit a report online at their secure website: www.txabusehotline.org. DFPS SWI is available 24/7, year-round.

Will anyone know who made the report?

We encourage you to provide your name and contact information, as it allows us to conduct a more effective investigation. Your identity will remain confidential, unless required by law. You may choose to report anonymously, but we won’t be able to share investigation results if you do. Reports may be referred to another agency if appropriate.

Who is required to report abuse in Texas?

Everyone. Texas law mandates that all individuals must report suspected abuse.

What services does APS provide?

APS offers services to address abuse, neglect, and exploitation. This includes social services, health services, such as emergency medical care, medications, food assistance, and more.

What are signs of elder mistreatment?

Common signs include hoarding, home disrepair, lack of utilities, and poor personal hygiene.

What are signs of physical abuse?

Look for bruises, scrapes, cuts, or other unexplained injuries.

What are examples of financial exploitation of the elderly?

Examples include intercepting checks or cash, telemarketing scams, power of attorney fraud, identity theft, and coercion for money or personal property—particularly when committed by a family member, friend, caregiver, or someone with whom the victim has a relationship. Other red flags include forged signatures, home improvement scams, and undue influence over estate planning decisions.

APS does investigate allegations of Self-Neglect. Self-neglect happens for a variety of reasons and APS can assist in ensuring a safe environment.

Who does APS investigate?

APS investigates allegations of abuse, neglect or exploitation when the perpetrator is the client (self-neglect), caregiver, family member, or anyone that the client has an ongoing relationship with.
