Adult Protective Services
Abusive behavior can lead to a variety of injuries such as scrapes, cuts, bruises, burns, fractures, or pressure sores. It may also result in confinement, sexual assault, psychological or verbal mistreatment.
Neglectful behavior can cause malnourishment, dehydration, over- or under-medication, unsanitary living conditions, and poor personal hygiene. Neglected seniors may also lack essential resources such as heat, running water, electricity, and medical care.
Exploitative behavior may cause a loss of income, property, or assets. It refers to the misuse of the financial or material resources of an elderly or disabled person for personal gain. This can include cashing Social Security or SSI checks, misusing a shared bank account, or seizing property and other resources.
In some cases, older adults or people with disabilities may experience isolation or illness and have no one willing or able to assist them in meeting their basic needs.
If you suspect abuse/neglect or financial exploitation of an adult age 65+ or age 18-64 with a severe disability report it. Call 1-800-252-5400 or visit TxAbuseHotline.org
